From Law Student to AI Founder: My Journey with Evatt AI
Hi, I’m Ashley Edgar. I’m a 23‑year‑old law student from Western Australia and the founder of Evatt AI, an AI platform built specifically for lawyers. My path has been anything but conventional—equal parts law, technology and constant learning.
The Early Days
During my law studies I became fascinated with artificial intelligence. While on an exchange program in Germany, I spent long nights in my Munich dorm room coding . My goal was simple: make lawyers’ lives easier. Those prototypes evolved into a tool that could search through millions of pages of case law and tens of thousands of statutes Today, Evatt AI uses that foundation to deliver research answers in seconds and draft high‑quality contracts.
Building Evatt AI
What sets Evatt AI apart is its legal expertise. I trained the system on more than forty‑five million documents across six common‑law jurisdictions—Australia, the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand and . Lawyers can type a question in plain English and receive jurisdiction‑specific answers backed by real case law. The platform also drafts letters of demand, NDAs, leases and other contracts, and reviews large bundles of documents in minutes. It’s already serving more than 1,500 lawyers and legal teams who use it to save hours each day.
Back to School: Studying AI in Zurich
Although the company is growing, I’ve decided to deepen my technical knowledge. In August 2025 I enrolled in post‑graduate certificates in software engineering and in artificial intelligence & data science at Constructor University in Zurich. Over the next six months I’ll spend more than 1,000 hours studying machine learning, natural language processing and reinforcement learning. These intensive courses run nine to six every weekday. I’m investing this time because I believe the next generation of legal AI—like “agent workflows” that proactively assist with complex tasks—will require a deep understanding of the technology. When I return, Evatt AI will be even smarter and more capable.
What’s Next
When I first started coding in that dorm room, I didn’t know if anyone would use what I was building. Today, with over 1,500 users and counting, I’m convinced that the future of law is intertwined with AI. My mission remains the same: to build tools that make lawyers’ lives easier by automating the drudgery and freeing them to focus on strategy, advocacy and creativity. Studying in Zurich is another step toward making that vision a reality.
